Save East Brisbane State School
Save East Brisbane State School
Why this petition matters
We ask that the Queensland Government resile from pulling down “The Gabba” in order that East Brisbane State School can continue to run at its current location or build a new school in the heart of the current catchment.
Since 1899, heritage-listed East Brisbane State School (EBSS) has stood beside the famous sporting arena, the Gabba.
The historic first cricket test match was played at the Gabba between Australia and South Africa in 1931, some 32 years after EBSS was opened.
In February 2023, the Queensland state Labor government announced a $2.7billion Gabba Olympic re-development, meaning the end of EBSS.
The newly elected Labor Australian government refused to financially support the Gabba Olympic plan. They do not want their fingerprints anywhere near the destruction of a 124 year old historic school.
Queensland tax payers will therefore pay for 100% of the Gabba Olympic redevelopment.
If this plan proceeds it will mean the destruction of school that has stood beautifully and restfully on its culturally significant site for 124 years now.
Before Brisbane was announced the host city for the 2032 Olympics, there were no plans to move the school, and the only plans being made were to increase student capacity through vertical expansion of the school, something commonly embraced by large cities around the world.
Only two options were essentially presented by the Queensland government; build a new school at the Coorparoo Secondary College campus or move the students to other primary schools.
In August 2023, the Queensland government announced a new primary school would be built beside Coorparoo Secondary College, and this school would also be called East Brisbane State School, even though this school is not located in East Brisbane.
This decision does not address the current and future schooling needs of the fast growing inner city suburbs of East Brisbane, Kangaroo Point and Woolloongabba.
We ask that the decision makers find an alternative stadium option for the 2032 Olympics, that does not impact on EBSS remaining at its current location.
Otherwise, provide a school in the heart of the current catchment that families can continue to walk, bike or scooter to, as around 7 in 10 families currently do.
