BIG changes are being proposed for Woolloongabba and parts of Kangaroo Point and East Brisbane. The Labor state government finally announced their plan for the Woolloongabba Priority Area – PDA – a massive 106 hectare area. PDAs are a planning tool that the Labor government uses to override the City Plan, and help them push through large, often controversial, development projects.
🌳 The good news is that two of the key things the Greens and the community have long been fighting for have been included in the plan: a new park and a new library/community hub on part of the Woolloongabba Cross River Rail site.
❌ But the bad news is that the Labor state government is proposing to open up at least 2.5 hectares of this publicly-owned site to developers to build up to 75 storeys on, with no binding requirements for public housing, or even housing that is genuinely affordable.
🏗️ They’re also proposing to upzone a large proportion of Woolloongabba and some of East Brisbane and Kangaroo Point, pushing the height limit for developments up to 75 storeys in some places.
⚠️More broadly, a really BIG issue with these plans is how little say the community will have over what represents a huge transformation of our neighbourhood.
